Hi Everyone
Firstly, thank you to all those who tried to contact us on the narrowboat and those who just followed and read the thread. We successfully connected outbound but as has been discussed, others could not establish a connection with us. On two occasions we had two-way communication after I had established a connection, on Friday Michael replied, "Hi John" before we lost connection. It was a start!
On Saturday I managed to catch Sean and we had a short two-way conversation.
The ChatGPT service worked ok, and I'm sure if I had had my PIN I could have sent an email. But inbound was not working but it would eventually become clear that this was part of a wider problem with inbound connections.

Our movement along the canal was causing intermittent Network access which was frustrating the problem and on Sunday we had a few long tunnels and hills around us which didn't help. To help with this we put my phone in a waterproof container on the boat roof (with a tether!)

So we had some success but i would like to make some changes to try and fix the 'incoming over mobile network' problem. Detlef has suggested some changes which i need to try but we ran out of time to try it on the boat. I plan to do some experimentation with this to see if i can get some reliable inbound connections.

We did have fun with the unit on the boat, the Telex had a presence, because it took up a fair amount of space and because when it was running it was very engaging and even some of the less enthusiastic friends on board seemed to be excited when it burst into life, even if it was just telling us we had lost connection to the server.

I will post some photos of the Telex on the boat and in action shortly. If we have success with the experiments to change settings for mobile use, I may consider trying to talk my very patient friends into trying this again!

On Sunday, a reporter heard about our Telex mission and came to talk to us about it at the boatyard. A story may appear in a publication at some point!

And we also visited the decommissioned bunker at Hack Green which had lots of interesting equipment including lots of Creed 444s!

Yes they are I thought I'd try that as it appeared to give me a valid link. I'll upload then to my server space and update.

Hello John,

the best would be to upload the pictures directly to the forum. That keeps your posts independent from other services. You can do that by clicking on "Full Editor & Preview" and afterwards on "File attachments". After clicking on "Add files" you can select the pictures from your local device via file dialogue.

Ok all, thanks for the tips on uploading to the forum. I had done this before but had forgotten that feature!

Here's a few from the weekend.

Bad signal in here! We had a few tunnels on the Sunday and thought this may have been causing our incoming connection issues. Now we know it lies with the phone/IP port forward issue.

It's not that portable!

A few of the many machines in the wonderful Hack Green Bunker museum https://www.hackgreen.co.uk/ .

Some more Creed machines

We didn't have a lot of space for the equipment but we found a perfect corner in the TV zone, we didn't need the TV anyway, we had a Telex machine!

Would we do it again? Yes absolutely! We want to fix the incoming calls issue first, maybe someone can lend us a fixed IP SIM card? :) We will check the incoming connections prior to taking the system mobile.

Update on the news article, apparently we may end up in the next Waterways World magazine where the i-Telex system is mentioned of course.

Next year it will be Wales and the wonderful Pontcysyllte aqueduct!

The Ex DDR machines you show would have come out of the P161-A2M Zil radio truck, once owned by Joe Bell (G4PMY) This was one of two that used to belong to the National Volks Armee (NVA) up to the time of the wall falling - The British Army took both of these vehicles back to England, and they were both subject to a massive investigation of the equipment fitted.

I also happen to know that the other truck is owned locally to me (and by someone that also has an I-Telex system, but sadly not yet online.... Chris, are you reading this?

The NVA version were retrofitted with the equipment you show above, the MG80 Morse Generator, and F1300 RO Teleprinter. The radio station has the capability of operating with RTTY directly to the printer, or also with the MG80 to act as a transmitting station.

Joe used to have a workshop at Hack Green, and a lot of the equipment on display there is thanks to his contacts.

Thank you Sean, most interesting! I am now wondering what happened to the Zil, i found this page https://armyradio.com/Zil_Radio_Truck.htmlwhich refers to his set-up. I would like to see the remaining complete one!
