Kupplung SEL Lo200X

Beitrag: # 33292Beitrag Baderbahn »

Hallo Miteinander,

1662403882638.jpg

Die Kupplung aus dem Schlachtgerät war "in gewöhnlichem Zustand" -also mit verdrecktem Kupplungsbelag und einseitig "polierter" Ankerscheibe - also das gewohnte Bild.
1662403882631.jpg

This is interesting Simon.

So it seems that there are a number of areas where the wear of the clutch can be adjusted out - I do not understand fully your comments about the friction material of the clutch - are you planning to get this replaced?

This is an area where I have contacts with experience - Automatic transmission overhaul for classic cars - having clutch plates relined. would be interesting to see if this troublesome component could be remanufactured with positive results - I will keep reading this thread, having picked up the L02000 at FN this year.

Guten Abend in die Runde,

zuerst zu M1ECYs Frage / First about your question, M1ECY:
Yeah, there are some places, where adjustments can be done. I'll replace the clutch material - at least on the test clutch. If it works, I'll "implant" the clutch into my working Lo2001 and do a reallife trial-run with it. Actually my Lo2001 is working with a just shimed, cleaned and grinded clutch - detailed description in german below.

I'm planing to replace the clutch-plate with some brake-shoe replacement material. I think, I'll have some time to manufacture a fixture and some example parts within the next few days.

Feel free to ask in english - I'll try my best to answer your points (maybe with a slightly wrong grammar, sometimes ;) )

Simon

Picking up this thread again - as Henning predicted, my Lo2000 is also showing signs of clutch failure.

Looking at the clutch here, and reading on Simon's modification, which serves to increase the magnetic field by moving the coil closer to the "Pole Piece" i wonder if the real problem still exists.
Lo2000 Clutch.PNG
Simon's clutch (above) shows clearly the wear on the pressure plate, and the limiting factor, the hub of the carriage advance gear - the inner silver ring is the soft iron "Pole Piece", the outer ring is of course a continuation of this, to allow the moulded gear to be made part of the assembly.

It is clear that there is a small but useable increase in diameter if this outer ring is machined below the level of the friction material - this could then allow a useful increase in diameter, thus reducing the rate of wear, there is also potential for improvement with modern friction materials being used.

The pressure plate, is of course highly polished, and a long way from flat - when the clutch is worn, the effective coefficient of friction is reduced - once the pressure plate is resting on the pole piece, the only parts of the clutch with power transmission are the remaining high spots, and these soon fail.

I am looking into getting the pressure plates remanufactured, and these will be surface ground to improve the overall "Flatness", likewise, I am also engaged on a search for better friction material - do we know the original material thickness?

Of course, we really cannot avoid the real flaw with this clutch system - all the time the motor is running, and the carriage is stationary, the clutch material is being worn out - there is no "return spring" to lift the pressure plate off the friction material, so all the time the machine is running, but not driving the carriage the parts are wearing.

I will keep a look out for a spare faulty clutch or two for development work - of course an electronic solution would be best for a permanent repair, but the existing clutch system must havea decent lifespan given the limited use these machines have out of commercial life.

Hello Sean,

the topics you're talking about are exactly the same ideas what I had - and mostly tried allready.

Actually, there are two "statuses" of damages:
  • Just corroded clutches with enough friction-material left (just needs some propper cleaning, a slightly sanding of the anchor-plate surface and maybe shimming)
  • worn out clutches (needs new friction-material, sanding of the anchor-plate and shimming)
The first kind of damage is easy to repair and won't need further machining (untill it's reaching stage two...).
Sadly, more and more clutches show the seccond kind of damage - so the friction-material needs to be renewed - and thus milled out.

To make the machining process as simple and versatile as possible, I've made a fixture which gives the possibility to manufacture the friction-material-inlays and also machine the clutch-assembly (mill out old friction-material, adjust the height after inserting the new material).

So let's talk about clutch-materials: I've tried some (... :/ ...) but - believe it or not - I never was able to achieve the same clutching strength than the original clutch can reach.
Actually, I'm in contact with an expert in friction-materials. Also, I'm planing to send him an old clutch to analyze the original friction-material and give me some material proposals.

Conclusion: Untill now, I've tried
  • many different friction-materials
  • few different friction-material diameters (removed the "outer metall ring")
  • different friction-material thicknesses
  • even tried with different overpowering-times of the clutch-magnet
But no success, so far...

Last, but not least: Some pictures, I've made during my journey so far.

Hello SImon,

I think the clutch material is almost certainly quite soft, and also having a high asbestos content - as such machining the original material is potentially quite hazardous.

Modern friction materials, especially for automotive braking is very hard, and does not become so effective until it is hot, sadly it is also quite abrasive.

The pressure plate material is also interesting, soft iron is best from a magnetic property, but also worst from a wear perspective - Plating the material with a different material I guess is not particularly effective - most electroplating of surfaces means only a minimal layer of material is deposited - heavy plating is something only really attainable in a commercial environment.

Will park this machine for a bit - I need to look into some options for an effective repair - keeping the original design is obviously a good thing, but perhaps the reality is, current materials are just not suited to this crazy application
